I Can't Say I Love You

Question: I have been dating the most amazing woman, and I am terrified of losing her. Every time I am with her I want to tell her how I feel about her but I can never find a time that feels right. I’m afraid she won’t feel the same way, and then I will feel like an idiot for admitting to her my feelings. What if telling her scares her away? In my family, we always said, “Love ya!” or some other form of greeting, but “I love you,” seems so strong. Of course, I want her to feel the same, but how do I know when and how to tell her without sounding like a fool?


Answer: Finding the courage to say "I love you" can be challenging, but it's a significant step in building and deepening your relationships. First, reflect on your feelings. Take some time to understand and reflect on your emotions. Why do you love this person? What is it about them that makes you want to say "I love you"? Understanding your feelings can give you more clarity and conviction. While there's no perfect time, it can help to choose a moment when you and the other person are relaxed and comfortable. A quiet and private setting can also make it easier to express your emotions.


Sometimes, rehearsing what you want to say can make it easier when the moment arrives. Practice saying "I love you" out loud in front of a mirror or write down your feelings in a note. When you're ready to say it, be genuine and sincere. If you're feeling extremely nervous, you can start by expressing your feelings in a less direct way. For example, you can say, "I have strong feelings for you," or "You mean a lot to me," before eventually saying "I love you."


Understand that the response may not always be what you hope for, and that's okay. The other person may need time to process their own feelings. Regardless of their response, it's important that you expressed your emotions honestly. Remember that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. Being open and honest about your feelings can lead to deeper and more authentic connections with others.


Be kind to yourself throughout this process. It's okay to feel nervous or anxious. Remember that expressing your love is a beautiful and brave thing to do. Ultimately, finding the courage to say "I love you" is a personal journey, and it's different for everyone. Trust yourself and your feelings, and when you feel ready, take that important step to express your love to the person who means so much to you.
