For Therapists Seeking Clinical Supervision
Get in touch with Dr. Debi Gilmore if interested in clinical supervision.
Goals & Objectives
My goal in supervision is to support your growth as a confident, skilled, and attuned therapist. Together, we focus on deepening your understanding of marriage and family therapy models while refining essential clinical skills such as documentation, session management, crisis intervention, and navigating ethical and legal considerations.
Equally important is your personal and professional development—because who you are as a therapist is just as meaningful as what you do.
For licensed professionals, our work together is considered consultation, and you retain full clinical responsibility for your clients. For those who are pre-licensed, our relationship will be one of formal clinical supervision.
A Supportive and Attuned Learning Environment
The process of becoming a more skilled therapist can feel both exciting and overwhelming. Many clinicians experience moments of vulnerability or self-doubt along the way—and this is a natural part of growth.
In supervision, I strive to create a safe, supportive environment where you can openly explore your work. I approach this process with warmth, curiosity, and respect for the complexity of what you are learning, encouraging you to be both gentle and persistent with yourself.
I also believe that supervision is most effective when I remain emotionally present—attuning not only to your clinical work, but to your experience as the therapist. My hope is that you feel this empathic connection, allowing supervision to become a place where you can grow with increasing confidence and clarity.
Moving from Technique to Attunement
One of the central focuses of our work is helping you move beyond simply applying techniques and toward truly being with your clients in an empathic, responsive way.
It is common for therapists—especially in training—to become highly focused on models, steps, and interventions. While these are important, an overemphasis on technique can sometimes pull you away from the deeper emotional experience of your clients.
In supervision, we will gently shift this focus. Through video review and discussion, I will guide you in stepping out of a purely mechanical approach and into a more emotionally attuned presence—learning to listen not just with your mind, but with your heart.
Developing Clear Clinical Understanding
As your ability to attune deepens, you will likely notice greater success in helping clients access and share their primary emotions in the moment. This is where meaningful change begins.
In our ongoing work together, we will connect your growing empathic skills with clear conceptualizations of process, interventions, and therapeutic structure—so you feel both grounded and confident in your clinical decision-making.
Experiential Learning Through Role Play
To support integration, I incorporate role play as a key part of supervision. After reviewing concepts and demonstrating interventions, you will have opportunities to practice in a supportive environment.
These experiential moments help bridge the gap between understanding a model and feeling your way through it—allowing new skills to become more natural and embodied in your work.
Feedback & Evaluation of Progress
When reviewing your sessions, I pay close attention to moments where you are effective and engaged. I believe in offering specific, strengths-based feedback to highlight what you are doing well.
From there, we build forward—using those strengths as a foundation for continued growth. I will also offer thoughtful guidance on how to deepen and expand your clinical impact, including shaping enactments and working more fully with underlying emotions.
